Building beside a neighbour's landmark jacaranda

The challenge
A developer was rebuilding on Kirribilli Avenue. The most significant tree on the site was the neighbour's large jacaranda, its trunk mostly over the boundary, and the new building, a booster water main and a bin area all reached into its root zone.
What we did
Assessed 18 trees for health, structure, life expectancy and landscape value.
Calculated how much of each kept tree's root zone the building would take (the jacaranda: about 12.5% in total, including what the existing building already took).
Set out vacuum-truck digging for the booster main if it can't move, with exposed roots wrapped in hessian and the pipe pushed under them.
Specified a raised paved bin area on gap-graded bedding so air and water still reach the roots, plus mulch and running boards in the protection zone.
